José María Maravall Herrero

José Mª Maravall Herrero was born in Madrid in 1942.

He holds a degree in law from Madrid Complutense University and a doctorate from the same university (1969), as well as a doctorate in sociology from Oxford University (1975), and a D.Litt (Hons) from Warwick University (1985).

He is Honorary Fellow of St. Anthony's College at Oxford University (1984) and Fellow of the British Academy (FBA) (2002)

He obtained the Sociology Chair at Madrid Complutense University in 1981 and since then he has carried out an extensive teaching career. Before that, on several occasions since 1973, he gave courses, conferences, etc., during visits St. Anthony's Collage at Oxford University, Warwick University, the Political Science Department at New York University, the Centre for European Studies at Harvard University, the Political Science Department at Colombia University and the Jean Monnet Chair at the European University Institute in Florence.

Since 1992 he has been Director of the Centro de Estudios Avanzados en Ciencias Sociales (Advanced Social Science Studies Centre) at the Juan March Institute in Spain .

Between 1982 and 1998 he was Minister of Education and Science in Spain.

He has published a prolific number of works in Spanish and in English, some of the most significant being: Dictadura y Disentimiento Político (1978), La Política de la Transición (1982), Las Reformas Económicas en las Nuevas Democracias -with L.C. Bresser and A. Przeworski- (1993), Los Resultados de la Democracia (1995), Regimes, Politics and Markets (1997), Democracy and the Rule of Law -with A. Przeworski- (2003), El Control de los Políticos (2003), Controlling Governments -with I. Sánchez Cuenca- (2007), etc.

He has been distinguished with the Grand Crosses of Carlos III and Alfonso X El Sabio, and the title of Chevalier des Palmes Academiques (France).
