The Center for Sociological Research has carried out a survey about perceptions about equality between men and women, and about gender stereotypes. Also about the distribution of household chores, care for dependent people or the behavior of both sexes.

Regarding the situation of women in Spain and the inequalities that exist between men and women, 67.2% of women believe that they are “very large or quite large”; When asking men, the figure drops almost 20 points to 48.2%.

When comparing the current situation with that of 10 years ago, 70.7% of Spaniards affirm that inequalities are less now and the majority of women also believe that they have decreased (67%) but 22.4% of interviewed indicates that inequalities are the same as a decade ago.

81.2% of women say that “they will not achieve equality unless men also fight for women's rights,” although the figure drops to 74.2% among men who also think so. .

The survey shows that 44.1% of men “very or somewhat agree” that “we have come so far in promoting women's equality that men are now being discriminated against”, something they think also 32.5% of women. Now, this statement is false for 65.5% of women.

Women in the world of work

When asking about some aspects such as salaries, promotion at work or access to positions of responsibility in companies, the difference in opinions between both sexes is notable. For 67.8% of women, the situation for girls to access a position of responsibility is worse, and 50.9% of men, who, on the other hand, also say 39.7%, think the same. that women have the same opportunities.

When it comes to reconciling work and family life, 72.5% of women say that they have it worse, and 58.5% of men say that women are the disadvantaged when it comes to combining both activities.

78.1% of women agree with the statement "women have to work harder than men to prove that they can perform the same job." This percentage drops 26 points when we ask men, 51. 8% agree and 46.3% deny that this is the case.

Regarding the statement “a woman with an active sexual life is criticized more than a man,” 87.2% of women agree with this and 76.2% of men as well. When talking about compliments, 49.5% of men believe that “it is always nice to receive one”, and the figure drops to 35.7% when asking women, in fact, 60.5% of them are in against this statement.

Furthermore, 83.5% of the female population affirms that “most pornography is sexist”, a thesis that men also support, but to a lesser extent (77.6%).

Stereotypes

For 66.5% of the population, watching pornography is more typical of men than women, the same goes for paying to have sexual relations: 84.9% of those surveyed affirm that it is more typical of the male sex.

On the other hand, 55.6% of those surveyed indicate that talking openly about feelings is more typical of women. There is a coincidence of opinions about taking the initiative in a sexual relationship, 71.6% of Spaniards believe that it is appropriate for both sexes equally.

Over the last 12 months

49.2% of men have heard sexist comments from friends or family, the figure is similar among women (45.6%). 13.8% of women claim to have witnessed a man sexually harassing a woman and 8.1% of men as well.
Regarding discrimination based on sex at work, 9.7% of women claim to have witnessed it and 5.4% of men also claim to have witnessed it.

The distribution of care and tasks

On a workday, women spend more time on household chores (cleaning, cooking, shopping...) than men, they spend 172 minutes (almost 3 hours) on average per day and they spend 126.76 minutes (2 hours) on average. . But when asking about childcare during a workday, the distance between both sexes increases, while women dedicate 412.25 minutes (6.7 hours) to their children, they spend about 228.88 minutes (3.7 hours) ) of his time.

When asking about caring for dependent people, the time is equal, although women spend more time (364.69 minutes, about 6 hours) and men 314.11 minutes (about 5 hours).

The data from this survey carried out in November, with a sample of 4,005 interviews, are available to all media and interested people on the website of the Sociological Research Center (www.cis.es).
