The CIS awards the first REIS Award for an article on the complexity of measuring racism through surveys
- The article "La compleja detección del racismo y la xenofobia a través de encuesta. Un paso adelante en su medición", by Mª Ángeles Cea D’Ancona, was published in 2009 in the 125th edition of the Revista Española de Investigaciones Sociológicas (REIS).
- In said article, the author assesses the effectiveness of the traditional indicators used in CIS surveys and compares them to other new indicators which are more effective in measuring disapproval of immigration.
The president of the Centro de Investigaciones Sociológicas (CIS), Belén Barreiro Pérez-Pardo, presided the 1st Award ceremony for the best article published in the Revista Española de Investigaciones Sociológicas (REIS), awarded to Mª Ángeles Cea D’Ancona for her article "The complexity of detecting racism and xenophobia through surveys. A step forward in their measurement", published last year in the journal's 125th edition.
During the ceremony, which took place on 15 April in the el Centro de Estudios Políticos y Constitucionales (CEPC), Belén Barreiro highlighted how the creation of this prize reflected the level of maturity and prestige achieved by the Revista Española de Investigaciones Sociológicas, one of the most important scientific journals in our country in the field of social sciences. Following this, Clara Riba Romeva, director of the Department of Political and Social Sciences of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra de Barcelona, underlined the main qualities of the article, and the appropriateness of awarding this first REIS award to a research project which assessed the effectiveness of the traditional indicators for measuring xenophobia in CIS surveys.
In her speech, Mª Ángeles Cea D´Ancona, Ph.D. in Sociology and lecturer of Research Methodology at the Universidad Complutense, talked about the main aspects of her research, highlighting the mistakes which can be made when trying to measure the phenomena of racism and xenophobia through surveys.
The award-winning article assesses the effectiveness of traditional indicators in CIS surveys, which are compared to others which were applied in the European Social Survey 2002-2003. The latter proved to be more effective in measuring disapproval of immigration, mainly due to the question format adopted in the questionnaire.
Following the reading of the prize award decision by the Secretary of the Jury and Director of the Department of Publications and Research Promotion CIS, Paloma Aguilar Fernández, the award diploma was presented.
The REIS
The Revista Española de Investigaciones Sociológicas (REIS) forms a fundamental part of the CIS' editorial activity and, both as a result of its history and the high quality demanded of contributors, it has become a reference publication for scholars or researchers in the field of social sciences. And it is the level of maturity and prestige it has achieved that have led to the creation of this award, which gives researchers with a less extensive academic career than those who are put forward for the National Award for Sociology and Political Science, the chance to gain public recognition.
This award, with a prize of 2,500 euro, awarded for the first time in January 2010, aims to acknowledge works published each year in the journal which are most original, relevant and which use a high quality methodology, at the same time giving their authors a boost by supporting the diffusion of their research activity throughout the national and international scientific community and increasing the visibility of their work in the field of social sciences.
