The CIS has carried out a survey on public opinion and tax policy in which respondents have been asked about issues such as their assessment of the functioning of public services, taxes or tax fraud, among other topics.

Taxes and tax fraud

88.9% of Spaniards believe that in our country there is “a lot or quite a lot” of tax fraud, and 81.7% consider that cheating the Treasury in the tax return “is cheating the rest of the citizens.” Regarding tax pressure, 36.7% believe that more taxes are paid in Spain than in Europe, while 31.2% estimate the opposite, that it is in Europe where more taxes are paid than in our country.

78.2% do not believe that those who have more pay more taxes, while on the other hand, 62.5% estimate that Spaniards are little or not at all aware and responsible when it comes to paying taxes.
Regarding the fight against tax fraud, 40.1% understand that the Administration makes “many or quite a lot” of efforts against tax fraud, a percentage that coincides with those who believe that the Administration makes few efforts in this field.

Public services assessment

The study also asks respondents to rate the operation of public services and 60% rate the operation of public transport as “very or fairly” satisfactory; for 52.2% citizen security; for 49.1%, teaching and for 45.9%, health care. The Administration of Justice is “very or fairly” satisfactory for 19.2% of those surveyed.

Almost 60% of Spaniards understand that “taxes are necessary so that the State can provide public services” and 14.3% that “taxes are a means to better redistribute wealth in society.”

The different public administrations allocate the money that we pay in taxes in Spain to finance public services and benefits and those surveyed understand that “very few” resources are dedicated to housing (80.1%); to research in science and technology (79.9%) and to rural areas (73.7%).

The State and the economy

48.3% of Spaniards are in favor of “the State should intervene in economic life, but respecting private initiative”, 22.8% believe that “the State should not intervene in economic life, except to correct possible imbalances”, while 18.2% believe that “the State should intervene in all economic life”.

Economic situation

When asked about their personal economic situation, 70.7% of Spaniards say that it is “good or very good”; that of the autonomous community where they reside is “good or very good” for 53.3%, while, if you ask about the situation in Spain, it is “good or very good” for 38.5%.

Life aspects

The study also asks about various aspects of the lives of Spaniards and their degree of satisfaction. On a scale of 0 to 10, where zero is “completely dissatisfied” and ten is “completely satisfied,” “family life” is rated 8.57, health is rated 7.67, social life is rated 7. 81; health with a 7.67 and the standard of living with a 7.24. These and other data are collected in the survey carried out from July 5 to 11 with 4,005 interviews.
