The CIS awards the II REIS Prize to an article on salary discrimination within organizations

Signed by Emilio Castilla, the article "Merit and discrimination within organizations: differences in the evaluation and remuneration of employees according to gender and ethnic origin" was published in 2010 in number 129 of the Spanish Journal of Sociological Research (REIS)

Wednesday, April 20, 2011.- Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Emilio J. Castilla explains in his article how the organizational processes used today to set workers' compensation can generate wage inequality within of the organizations. Using workforce data from a large private sector organization, the author identified and examined the two main stages of a common company practice: variable employee pay using a performance bonus.

This research shows that the gender, ethnic origin or nationality of employees has a direct impact on both the first phase of evaluating their performance and the second phase of setting their salary.

Longitudinal analysis shows that structurally equivalent employees (i.e., in the same position and work unit, with the same supervisor and the same human capital) obtain different salary increases even after receiving the same score on the evaluation of the employee. performance, simply because of their gender, ethnicity or nationality.

The article concludes with a discussion of the relevance of these results to the existing sociological literature on discrimination and pay inequality based on gender and ethnicity within contemporary organizations.

This award, endowed with 2,500 euros and awarded for the first time in January 2010, aims to especially distinguish the works of greatest originality, relevance and methodological quality published annually in the journal, at the same time providing a stimulus to its authors to support the dissemination of their research activity in the national and international scientific community and increase the visibility of their work in the field of social sciences.
