Biography

  • Born in Madrid, in 1942.
  • Director of the Center for Advanced Studies in Social Sciences of the Juan March Institute in Spain.
  • Professor of Sociology at the Complutense University of Madrid.
  • Honorary Fellow of St. Antony's College at the University of Oxford (1984) and Fellow of the British Academy (FBA) (2002).
  • PhD from the Universities of Madrid (1969) and Oxford (1975), as well as a D. Litt. (Hons.) from the University of Warwick (1985).
  • Since 1973, and repeatedly, he has been a Research Fellow at St. Antonys College, Oxford; Senior Lecturer at the University of Warwick; Visiting Professor in the Department of Political Science at New York University; Visiting Professor at the Center for European Studies at Harvard University; Visiting Professor in the Department of Political Science at Columbia University; and has taught in the Jean Monnet Chair at the European University Institute in Florence.
  • From 1982 to 1988 he was Minister of Education and Science of Spain.
  • Among other publications he has written: Dictatorship and Political Dissent (1978), The Politics of Transition (1982), Economic Reforms in New Democracies (with LC Bresser and A. Przeworski) (1993); The Results of Democracy (1995), Regimes, Politics, and Markets (1997), Democracy and the Rule of Law (with A. Przeworski) (2003), The Control of Politicians (2003), and Controlling Governments (with I Sánchez-Cuenca) (2007). He has also published in sociology and political science journals in Great Britain, the United States, France, Italy and other countries.

José Mª Maravall Herrero was born in Madrid in 1942.

Graduated in Law from the Complutense University of Madrid, he holds a Doctor of Law from that University (1969) and a Doctor in Sociology from the University of Oxford (1975), as well as a D.Litt (Hons) from the University of Warwick (1985).

He is an Honorary Fellow of St. Antony's Collage, University of Oxford (1984) and a Fellow of the British Academy (FBA) in 2002.

He obtained the Chair of Sociology at the Complutense University of Madrid in 1981 and, since then, has carried out extensive teaching work. Before, and repeatedly since 1973, he has visited to give courses, conferences, etc. St. Antony's Collage at the University of Oxford, the University of Warwick, the Department of Political Science at the University of New York, the Center for European Studies at Harvard University, the Department of Political Science at Columbia University and the Jean Monnet Chair of the European University Institute in Florence.

Since 1992 he has been Director of the Center for Advanced Studies in Social Sciences of the Juan March Institute.

From 1982 to 1988 he held the ministerial portfolio of Education and Science in Spain.

He has an extensive bibliographical work in Spanish and English, highlighting the following publications: Dictatorship and Political Dissent (1978), The Politics of Transition (1982), Economic Reform in New Democracies -with LC Bresser and A. Przeworski- (1993), The Results of Democracy (1995), Regimes, Politics and Markets (1997), Democracy and the Rule of Law -with A. He is in possession of the Great Crosses of Charles III and Alfonso X the Wise, and is Chevalier des Palmes Academiques (France).
